Repair in practice: how to repaint the furniture yourself

Sometimes there are situations when repainting furniture is the best way out of this situation. For example, you moved the closet to another room, and now it does not match the shade with the parquet.

Tired of faded tones, or want something new? Old furniture is made of natural wood, but has long lost its attractive appearance? In all these cases, rescue brush and paint. Painting the furniture with your own hands - the process is not too complicated, if you follow the technology.

Process

  • Surface cleaning

First you need to wash off all surfaces of dirt and fatty deposits. For this purpose detergents and a sponge are used. After the furniture has been washed off, it should be dried thoroughly with napkins.

  • Furniture disassembly

Before you repaint the furniture, it must be disassembled, but it is not always advisable. Composite cabinets and drawers with drawers, paneled facades must be disassembled in order to do the job well. Also, do not forget to free the furniture from the handles and all the extra equipment.

Furniture simple forms can be painted without disassembling. No need to disassemble cabinets and in the event that you are going to restrict the painting of facades.

Tip: before starting the work, the fittings that you do not plan to remove, as well as those parts of the furniture that will not be painted, but are adjacent to the painted surfaces, can be glued with masking tape.

  • Sanding surface

Sanding before repainting furniture is a necessary process, especially if its surface is laminated. Modern coatings are made of polymer films, and the paint does not stick to them.

In order for the laminate to be colored evenly and the paint kept well, it is necessary to strengthen the adhesion work, that is, the adhesion force of the paint coat to the base, for which purpose make it as rough as possible. To this end, all surfaces are carefully treated with sandpaper, "null."

Do not forget to wear a respirator: the work is very dusty, and the resulting dust is unhealthy.

  • Surface primer

Before the start of painting the furniture with your own hands, you need to prime the surface. This is necessary so that the paint will fall evenly, and over time did not start to peel off.

You will need a primer that is suitable for all surfaces, including glass and tiled. Such primers based on polyurethane are quite expensive, but this waste is justified: it depends on how well the primer lies, how well the paint will hold.

After application, the primer should dry for at least 12 hours.

  • Defects and cracks

Before you repaint the furniture, it is necessary to seal up the defects and cracks, even if they seem insignificant. This is done using putty, for example, based on latex or epoxy.

It is best to putty after the surface is primed - some of the minor defects will remove the soil, and it will be clearly seen in what places you need to work. After the dents and cracks are puttied, let the product dry, if necessary, go around “zero” and prime the surface again. After the second primer, the furniture must be dried for at least 12 hours.

  • Paint selection

So that the result of furniture repainting does not disappoint, you need to choose the “right” materials, including the most suitable paint.

If the surface is laminated with a film, then you can choose from alkyd enamels and paints based on polyurethane. On the bank, look for the mark: “for furniture”, it meets all the requirements for paints and varnishes used indoors.

Epoxy paint will dry for a long time, and smell for a long time. Using special primers, you can use acrylic latex paints, but the result may not please.

  • The choice of tools for painting

For painting furniture with your own hands you need tools: spatulas (better rubber) for putty, brushes for applying primer, brushes for paint rollers, or paint brushes. In some cases, the effect of “uneven” paint application is required, with visible brush streaks - for example, for Provence style furniture.

If you want to get a flat surface - use a roller from velor. Foam as a “fur coat” for the roller when working with furniture is not suitable. To work in corners and other places where the roller does not turn around, you will need a small brush with a beveled bristle cut.

How to repaint furniture professionally? Use the spray gun, its consumption should be from 20 to 200 g of paint per square meter. The calculation of the diameter of the nozzle and the required pressure can be made on special tables, given the viscosity of the paint used.

  • Finishing

Finishing of repainted furniture is to cover it with varnish. It is better if it is a water-based varnish, it does not emit odorous and harmful substances into the air. Especially important is the coating for the furniture that is often touched by hands, touched during the passage.

Thus, the doors of the storage system in the entrance area or kitchen furniture can quickly lose an attractive appearance, if you do not protect them with a lacquer layer, and even better with two. Between the application of the first and second protective layers of varnish should be at least 24 hours.
