How to choose a picture for the interior

At first glance, the paintings are just another interior decoration that does not play any special role in the setting. But with the help of a well-chosen image you can change a lot: smooth out excessive angularity of furniture, mask wall defects, highlight an accent zone that attracts attention, emphasize a stylistic concept, revive the design or, on the contrary, make it stricter and more solid. Pictures with perspective increase the space, make it deeper. The color scheme of the interior creates the mood of the room, and the images within it correct it, adding light notes and half tones. Let's try to figure out how to choose the right picture for the interior and where to place it in the room.

Criteria for selecting paintings

It is necessary to choose paintings taking into account their main characteristics:

  • The size. The length and width of the image are of great importance in the visual perception of the space of the room.
  • Color palette. The picture can become a living, accent element in the interior or, conversely, precipitate an excessively bright environment.
  • Plot. One of the most important characteristics. It is necessary to select the paintings so that their content meets the aesthetic needs of home owners, but at the same time supports the stylistic decision of the room design.
  • The form. Square, round, oval or rectangular frames create a special geometry that either emphasizes the smoothness of the lines in the setting, or smooths out complex configurations and overall angularity.

It also takes into account the compatibility of the painting with the finishing material of the wall on which it will be located. Frame - a separate story. Depending on the material, color, texture and secondary decor, it can turn into a luxurious addition, which even slightly eclipses the image, or become a pale shadow of the picture that only outlines its borders.

To size

The size of the picture is linked to the dimensions of the object, which is located below. If a bed, table, sofa or other large element is attached to the wall, then the image should have a width corresponding to at least half the length of the furniture. Otherwise, the picture will look lonely and inappropriate. The rest of the wall finally "crush" a little decor. The exception to the rule will be only modular images, since the calculation of their width does not take into account the distance between the components. Therefore, diptychs and triptychs can relate to the length of furniture in a ratio of 2: 3. The height of the picture also matters. If the room has low ceilings, then use vertical images that stretch the space.

A picture of medium size (approximately 1 m in height) should be placed at a distance of 2 m from the intended point of view. If the canvas is closer, then the contemplator will intuitively want to retreat a couple of steps to appreciate the charm of the plot. Accordingly, the distance should be equal to double the height of the picture.

By color range

The selection of colors is performed in accordance with the color composition of the room. First you need to decide on what role the designer assigns to this decor. If the picture becomes an accent, then its plot should be made in bright colors that will contrast with the decor. For example, in the blue and white design of the room will highlight the image in yellow or red. When the picture should merge with the interior, support the color concept, then its colors are selected according to the principle of analogy. For example, in a brown-beige design with notes of whiteness, canvases made in walnut, sandy, pale yellow tones with gold. The ideal plot will be the sunset sun over clear water ripples or autumn landscape.

According to the plot

The plot should correspond to the functional purpose of the room. Appetizing, “tasty” still lifes or images of gastronomic delights are suitable for the kitchen: fragrant dishes with crispy crust and smoked smoke, juicy fruits, fresh vegetables with droplets of moisture on the peel, juices in misted jugs, sweet berries in wicker baskets with checkered napkins as a substrate . For the bedroom, choose soft, calm compositions that are associated with peace and relaxation: forest edges, reeds near the river banks, seascapes, the starry sky above the sleepy city. Alternatively, you can use reproductions of paintings by famous masters: Savrasov, Shishkin, Levitan. Do not confuse quiet scenes with the sad and dreary. In the living room, the atmosphere is completely different. Companies and family members gather here, recreation, as a rule, involves active games, watching TV, and noisy gatherings. The atmosphere of the hall is energetic, so the picture for it should have a special dynamics. Panoramas of cities, images of the water element in all their glory, adventure scenes will do. For the hallway pick neutral canvases that will help guests to put together the right opinion about the owners of the apartment. Do not get involved in surrealism or abstraction. Among the plots, preference is given to portraits, flower arrangements, still lifes or natural landscapes. Since the entrance hall is the face of an apartment, avoid pictures that carry a negative charge, with scenes of violence, death, destruction or catastrophe.

In the stylistic direction

Painting has many trends, most of which gave rise to design directions. By the classic interior fit paintings made in the same style, romanticism, realism, Empire, academic, sentimentalism, symbolism, aestheticism. It can be reproductions of famous paintings exhibited in museums and which have become part of the cultural heritage, or original works of unknown artists. For minimalism, high-tech, modern styles, avant-garde, surrealism, chinoiserie, underground, cubism, impressionism, expressionism are suitable. To modern select paintings from the flow of art nouveau or anachronism, neoclassicism. For art deco and pop art are suitable scenes made in the same style of painting. Provence combines images written according to the principles of Biedermeier. For eclectic or fusion, choose paintings in the style of art Brut, Luchism. Futurism is combined with paintings that relate to fantasy and cosmism. Loft prefers street art, kitsch, hyperrealism.

Framing pictures

The frame is selected primarily to the picture itself. Its compatibility with the interior goes by the wayside. The frame is clothes of a cloth in which it can look good or absolutely ridiculous. Traditionally, framing is made of baguette. This is a classic version of the relief frame. Framing is divided into three types: flat, beveled in / out. It may have a different color, shape and additional decor. For classic paintings suitable gilded frame with numerous curls or carvings. For modern paintings choose glass and metal frames. Alternatively, the image can be hanged at all "without anything." According to the aforementioned analogy, the picture will be “naked”, which is only suitable for bold interiors.

The only exceptions are diptychs, polyptychs and triptychs. The modularity of the paintings does not require framing, which in this case will be an extra element that distracts attention.

How to hang pictures

Each interior element should be in its place, only in this case the situation will look complete. This rule applies to paintings. In the bedroom linen is better to hang over the bed. If there is no TV in the room and the opposite wall is empty, then a double canvas is placed on it. In the hallway, the paintings are placed on both sides of the mirror or along the corridor on an empty surface. In the living room is the best option is the wall, which has a sofa. In the children's room, pictures are found in the play corner or above the bed.

Consider also the decoration of the wall on which the picture will be hung. For example, contrasting striped wallpapers are combined with a bright canvas that breaks the overall ideality of geometry.

Modular pictures

Modular pictures, depending on the number of components, are classified into diptychs, triptychs, polyptychs. The practice of dividing an image into segments appeared in the Middle Ages, but in the interior a similar solution was used relatively recently. In the classic version of the central canvas is the largest, and the size of the side is 1/2 or 1/3 of the main part of the composition. The whole scenic group looks more like a window with shutters. Modular paintings of this format are still used in the design of altars in churches and temples. The main rule for creating triptychs and diptychs is a single theme in the segments, that is, they do not have to be a continuation of each other.

And in the interiors use the technique of "cutting" one image into many parts. Modular pictures will become an accent no matter what plot they are on. In this case, the role is played by an unusual form of image feeding, a segmented structure. Parts of the picture can be placed horizontally or vertically. Complex compositions, which consist of four or more segments, can “fold” into a single whole according to more complicated schemes. Flowers, trees, city panoramas became popular subjects for modular pictures.

How to make compositions

When composing the composition, be sure to pay attention to the size of the wall to be decorated. This is important for getting the right ratio. According to the “golden section” rule, the size of a group of paintings should relate to the background in a 3: 1 ratio. Cloths can be arranged according to various schemes: linear, parallel, circle, rhombus, triangle, rectangle, asymmetric group. If you use images of the same size, it is better to hang them in a line at an equal distance from each other. For the layout of different-sized paintings it is necessary to choose a group principle, when a large canvas is placed in the center of the composition at eye level, and those that are smaller frame it. An unusual solution would be a linear arrangement of images from the largest to the smallest. Beautifully asymmetric compositions that occupy two adjacent walls and a corner. If the surfaces are painted in different colors, then you can play on the contrast. For example, on the yellow wall have pictures in blue frames, and on the azure - in the frame of a sunny shade or with gold.

Conclusion

Sometimes to find a suitable picture is very difficult. Painting, as you know, not only "stops time", but also gives the image a soul. If the spiritual component of the picture does not find a response from a person, it means that the canvas has not yet found its owner. The rules for the selection of images for the interior must be considered, but the aesthetics of the canvas must first of all correspond to the tastes of the buyer. If the picture fits the interior perfectly, but the owner doesn’t like something, the desired aura will not form in the room.
