Panoramic windows in the interior of apartments and houses

Talented science-fiction writers, as we know, are in many ways ahead of their time and predict innovations that the world is destined to achieve. In many futuristic works of contemporaries, the house of the future consists of glass and has transparent walls. In fact, such buildings already exist. The pioneer of a new landmark in architecture was Mies van der Rohe. He designed a glass house whose walls turned into windows. The history of the building is associated with numerous scandals, which became the “black PR” for this successful combination of bold constructivist ideas and minimalistic forms. The customer simply refused to accept the work of the architect and the relationship was taken to court and the press. Intermediate position between traditional openings and futuristic glass walls occupy panoramic windows in the interior. In the people they are sometimes called "French." Why did the windows get its name and when did it appear for the first time?

Panoramic windows and their varieties

Panoramic windows first appeared in one of the provinces of the country - Provence. The French hinterland, whose name is familiar to any designer, gave birth to the stylistic direction of the same name, which, by the way, is also in demand among our compatriots. The first mentions of such constructions date back to the middle of the 7th century. Of course, at that time glass was not used everywhere, so they could be called “windows” only symbolically, based on the functional purpose. Provence is known not only for its lovely landscapes with endless rows of lavender fields, but also for its warm, mild climate.

Both of these conditions became the reason for creating unusual “doors” (and in Europe they are still called so), which blur the boundary between the house and the surrounding beauty, letting in sunlight and the fresh air of the Cote d'Azur. The design was a strong metal frame with two doors, which was located just above the floor. Glasses of this size were not yet manufactured at that time. The leaves, which were thrown open or moved apart, were filled with wood.

After the glass industry made a big leap in development, the windows began to let in the light even in an open form. The original interior idea began to be applied not only in France, but was also taken up by other countries. At the moment there are several classifications of panoramic windows.

Depending on the method of opening, the structures are divided into three types:

  • Swing. Traditional design, which is typical for classic doors. Swing panoramic windows are convenient for rooms with narrow openings, in which there is no room for sliding doors.
  • "Harmonic". The original version, in which several sashes are folded "book" and in the open form are placed in the "parking" area on the side of the outer wall. "Accordion" is not suitable for small rooms.
  • Parallel-swinging. The same design have modern doors. Folds just go to the sides, thereby saving space.
  • Considering the design features, panoramic windows are divided into two types:
  • With shtulpom. When open, they allow you to enjoy the full panorama, but the sash can only be pivotal (i.e. open to itself and to the side).
  • With impost. This vertical web is a component of the swing-out mechanism. Thanks to him, the windows can be opened completely or partially “on themselves” in order to slightly ventilate the room. Unfortunately, the impost, located in the middle, violates the concept of complete openness, which is characteristic of a panoramic design.

  • As for the material performance of the frame, the windows are classified into the following types:
  • Wood. They are made of larch and oak. To create budget options use pine. Since the solid wood can deform over time, glued laminated timber is used instead. Such windows have a special aesthetics and at the same time they “breathe” even when closed.
  • Plastic. Modern, practical material, with which more and more often glazed balconies in apartments. "Bribes" PVC with its relatively low cost.
  • Aluminum. The material has a low weight, which allows the manufacture of large and light panoramic windows. Previously, aluminum was used only for cold glazing of summer terraces or attics. After the technology of introducing thermal insulation between the outer and inner part of the profile was developed, the material was used everywhere in all rooms of the house.
  • Glass composite. The material has become a novelty of recent years, but has already managed to recommend itself as a reliable, lightweight option. Fiberglass windows cost a lot of money.

By type of glass filling designs are classified into:

  • Triplexes. There is a transparent film between the outer and inner glass. Multi-layering allows the material not to crumble when struck on small fragments, but to become covered with a mesh of cracks in the place of local mechanical impact.
  • Strained glass. It exceeds the usual strength by five or six times. When damaged, the material is scattered by blunt-edged fragments, which reduces the risk of damage to a person nearby. The impact force must be greater than with the usual kick, since the glass also bends quite well.
  • Electrochromic option. Ultra-modern smart glass, the transparency of which is adjusted using the remote. The material is very expensive and is used only in luxury apartments or luxury country houses.
  • Float glass. The material is made by the same technology: liquid glass mass is poured on the molten metal (tin). Thermal polished glass has a reflective property and does not distort the image, which is typical of the usual.

Large panoramic windows are usually decorated with decorative layout or shprosom. It is a figured lattice inside the frame, which can be laid on, interglass or constructive. Variants of the location of the sprint mass, which facilitates the choice of the original window design.

Panoramic windows are classified according to their functional purpose on portals and “accordions”. In the first, the door to the street or terrace occupies only a part of the structure, and in the second case, the whole area. Also, windows can be solid and sectional. The second option is more durable and reliable due to the presence of partitions.

Benefits

The concept of complete openness has been practiced for more than half a century. It was she who caused the blurring of boundaries and the appearance of popular studio apartments, arches and panoramic windows. Thanks to such design techniques, the rooms “breathe” and fill with air. Survey designs are a successful symbiosis of a door and window opening and have a number of indisputable advantages, among which are noted:

  • Presentable, modern look of the house from the outside and rooms from the inside.
  • An excellent overview of the surrounding beauty and the opportunity to go out on the terrace or immediately into the courtyard, garden, to the gazebo. Such windows are highly valued in private houses and cottages, where before the eyes of the household there will be not a dull cityscape, but vivid natural panoramas.
  • Visual expansion of the space of cramped rooms due to the illusory transparent border.
  • Good natural lighting, which is so highly regarded in provence, minimalism, loft and Scandinavian style.

When choosing a quality material for the window, it will also provide good thermal and sound insulation.

disadvantages

Panoramic windows are not without some disadvantages. These include:

  • Difficulties when installing in apartments. To establish a panoramic structure will require the coordination of redevelopment in the housing inspection, which is not always a success. In some buildings, it is simply impossible to build a long window into the load-bearing wall without compromising its strength.
  • The complexity of caring for deaf glasses. The problem is relevant again for apartments. If housing is located on the upper floors, then without the involvement of industrial climbers can not do.
  • Strong heating of the room. A large amount of natural light has its drawbacks. Since the throughput of panoramic windows reaches a record 90%, the room will heat up as if it was “dressed” in black and placed on the sun itself. High-quality air conditioning will save the situation.
  • Difficulties in installing radiators, which are traditionally placed near the wall under the window.
  • High price.

Another drawback can be considered psychological discomfort that some people experience with such openness to look from the street. Subconsciously, it seems to a person that he is visible to someone all the time. The blinds will save the situation, as the French windows traditionally do not curtain with thick curtains.

Examples of using viewing windows in different rooms

Panoramic windows are universal, they organically fit into the interior of absolutely any room: nursery, bedroom, hall, guest. The main thing is that there are two conditions:

  • Having the ability to embed a similar opening in the design of the house.
  • A beautiful view that will be opened to households.

As for stylistic compatibility, French windows are suitable even for strict classics, but combinations with Provence, art nouveau, minimalism, hi-tech, Scandinavian and eco style are considered the most advantageous.

Living room

The fireplace and a separate corner at the observation window with a low couch covered with pads give a special coziness to the living room. A niche under a miniature sofa can be filled with books, thus it will be possible to organize a small place for reading. If the opening does not reach the floor, then it can be called French only symbolically, although it retains all the advantages of the original (except for going out). The French window is usually located behind the back of the sofa, which is the center of the design composition. Such an arrangement involves admiring the standing landscape while standing, but the problem can be solved by choosing a sofa with an unusual design with a double back. Thus, at the disposal of the owners will be twice the number of "seating" places for guests. You can isolate the corner near the panoramic window with the help of a podium on which a pictorial composition of a pair of chairs and a coffee table is installed.

Bedroom

The bedroom should be comfortable with a peaceful interior that promotes good rest and sound sleep. Panoramic windows will help to fall asleep, having a beautiful view of the street before your eyes. Traditionally, the panoramic wall is located on the side of the bed, as the headboard looks at a blank wall with a TV. In the morning you can wake up swimming in the sun, which guarantees a good mood and tone for the whole day. If the location of the room is angular, then you can decorate it with a long modular window that will capture two walls at once. Such a project should be carefully developed by a professional, since the load on the structure will be enormous. If we are talking about the mansard bedroom, then the panoramic windows will be advantageously combined with openings on the roof, opening the view of the clear sky. In such an attic room will be able to plunge into the nature. The household will feel the pleasant sensations during the rain.

Kitchen and dining room

In the kitchen, households spend the lion's share of free time. One way or another, it is here that tea parties are held, small respite during the preparation of lunch and intimate conversations. The presence of a panoramic window in this room will give the kitchen a special comfort and flavor. During a meal, it is important for a person to have an optimistic psychological attitude. To ensure a good appetite, in the design of the dining room they try to avoid using dark, cold tones and screaming, lurid details. The natural landscape is perceived by man as a composition with a perfect combination of colors, which helps to raise the mood during the meal.

In the combined premises, the dining area is often settled near the bay window. The open view, and even with the multifaceted geometry of the frame will be a stylish addition to the interior.

Cabinet

In the office for men establish strict panoramic windows with transparent glass and solid blinds, pleated. Shaded expensive leather upholstery wooden frames. In the workshop of the girl, French windows are decorated with panel curtains or flirty curtains made of air organza. In order not to lose the opportunity to contemplate the landscape, the workplace should not be “hidden” inside the room. The conditional center is moved closer to the main decoration of the interior so that you can work with natural light, which is more than enough.

Bathroom

Many may find it inappropriate to place viewing windows in the bathroom, where it is necessary to hide what is happening from the views of strangers from the street. The problem is easily solved with the help of curtains, blinds or stained glass. Before the design is better to have a bath or jacuzzi. In order to be buried in flakes of foam without a hint of embarrassment, windows should go out onto the back yard of their own possessions. In luxurious apartments, this improvised door leads to the pool or bath, where you can continue water treatments.

Design and color scheme

Traditionally, window frames are white. This tint is given to plastic, from which standard double-glazed windows are made, and it is also welcomed in the “native” for the construction style - provence. Black color will emphasize the severity and conciseness of the interior. To order the buyer can make a frame of any shades in harmony with the decor of the room. Brown wood tones are consistently associated with classic and eco style. Glass can also be given special shades of aquamarine, ripe cherries, sage or mustard. It should be borne in mind that a similar tone in the sunlight will acquire the interior of the room during the day, while the windows are closed. If the design has impressive dimensions, then it is better to enter the colored pieces in a mosaic method into the blind corner gaps between the shspros panels.

Decorating huge windows

The French windows themselves are an adornment of the room and the facade of the house, so their beauty should only be slightly emphasized, but not over-focused on the luxurious decor. Most often, the glass in them is tinted or applied with a complex geometry. It is recommended to close the French windows with blinds, thin, light curtains (optimally organza) or panel, roll models, which when folded will not interfere with admiring the scenery on the street. As an option, sliding-type screens are used, which, if necessary, are removed altogether.

Options for arranging furniture in rooms with windows to the floor

When placing a furniture set, such a colorful room decoration as a panoramic window must be taken into account. Most often, the ground in front of it is released at all, so that there is no interference with free exit to the street. At a distance of half a meter, you can place a small resting place for two, which will allow you to enjoy the scenery while drinking tea or reading a book. Massive furniture (mostly sofas) is usually turned back to the window and placed at a distance, as the rest on it involves watching TV. Storage systems, racks and cabinets are installed around the perimeter of the room, but not close to the wall where the panoramic window is located, since the effect of space expansion may be lost due to such visual load.

French windows often decorate expensive suites in skyscrapers, where it's a sin to lose such a splendid view, powdered with clouds. In ordinary city apartments, there is a popular option with access to a loggia or a balcony, where there is a seating area or a home greenhouse. Many designers believe that the future is beyond the panoramic windows, as the concept of openness not only remains popular, but is constantly evolving, erasing the remnants of borders. The unique design is good because it allows you to be at home all the time and at the same time feel yourself in harmony with nature, which constantly appears before the eyes in all its glory.
