Moroccan style in the interior

Morocco remains for many of our compatriots a distant and unexplored country, which is located somewhere in Africa. In fact, the geographical location makes the state an owner of unique climatic conditions. Morocco is comfortably located in the northwest of the African continent, but at the same time only 14 km of the Strait of Gibraltar separate it from the Spanish shores. The state is sometimes called the "country of four seasons." In the morning, you can climb the Atlas Mountains, experience the scorching heat of the Sahara desert in the afternoon, and swim in the warm waters of the Mediterranean Atlantic in the evening. More than 95% of Moroccans are Muslims, so they treat guests with special attention and honor. The furnishings of the houses fit into the overall design concept of the East, but it is not without specific elements that are characteristic only for this country. Moroccan style in the interior is not used as often, but due to its versatility, lightness, laconicism, it organically fits into both luxury homes and small apartments.

The history of the formation of style

The history of the Moroccan style is closely connected with the path of development along which this state passed. Morocco since ancient times attracted the attention of the conquerors. They came to these lands and slowly but surely survived the Berbers - the people who inhabited the country. Now this segment of the population is only 1/3 of the total number. The conquerors considered the Berbers invaders and robbers who illegally occupied advantageous positions near the trade routes passing through the Sahara. First, they were attacked by the Phoenicians, and then - the Carthaginians.

Having come under the influence of the Roman Empire, Moroccans finally learned about a peaceful life and first encountered Christianity. Peace reigned only a couple of centuries, while Morocco was not conquered by the Arabs. Muslims overthrew the old religion and planted Islam, which remained here. Closer to the XIX century, the country was again conquered by the Europeans and became a colony. Britain, Germany, Spain and France fought for it. The latter and Morocco has acquired at its full disposal. Surprisingly, the French did not try to impose their style in local interiors. The features of the "indigenous" design were preserved and supplemented with new ones.

As can be seen from the rich history, Morocco has been influenced by different nations. All this is reflected in the features of the interior decoration of rooms. Most strongly on the indigenous "Berber" direction influenced the Moorish and Spanish styles (both closest neighbors). In the Moroccan interiors, there are rough “native” features, oriental, elegant motives of the Moors and light Castilian notes.

Style features

Modern Moroccan style has almost no differences with the same direction, which was used in the design of housing many centuries ago. Think about where the country is located and it will become clear why the house for a Moroccan has become an oasis, a place for rest, rest, reflection and intimate conversations with relatives. This piece of personal space should stand out among the monotonous desert, delight the eye and have a pleasant pastime. In the first place is comfort, then beauty follows, and only in the third position is the functionality.

Among the main features of the Moroccan style note:

  • Use of rough parts. This trend is primarily ethnic, so it uses vintage elements that are specific to Berbers.
  • Small furniture. The luxury and color of the situation is achieved due to the abundance of textiles and a palette of colors. The furniture goes by the wayside and considerably “shallows”, that is, they use only padded stools, low tables, couches. Alternatively, the seating position can be made from some pillows laid directly on the floor.
  • Geometric shapes. In the Moroccan interiors there are unusual outlines for Europeans. Branded Moroccan houses can be considered arched aisles, the dome of which is like a keyhole or stretched to the sharp tip, crowning the middle.
  • The decor used colored glass (mosaic), glazed tiles with original oriental patterns, abundance of variegated textiles, wood, stone.

Polished wooden surfaces in Morocco are considered too boring. They are necessarily decorated with intricate carvings, which echoes the ornate ornament on the walls.

Ideal direction for decoration of country houses, villas, and cottages. The main criterion in this case - the location in nature. Traditionally, Berber houses have large windows that overlook either the picturesque backyard or the street with the beauty of the local landscape. There is no better addition to the ethnic decoration than the natural, natural environment.

Color spectrum

The basis of the color gamut is warm shades. Moroccan interiors are bright and colorful, but at the same time the situation is not devoid of oriental grace. Red, pink, burgundy, wine, coral, fuchsia, peach, yellow, and brown prevail in the color palette. The influence of the east can be traced to the use of blue, blue, lilac, turquoise. Such traditional combinations as red with gold (yellow), sky and orange are used for interior design. Due to the use of luxurious colors, the style claims to be a high luxury, akin to the chic of Baroque and Rococo. Ideas for decorating rooms are drawn from nature itself: red-orange sunset sun, pale yellow sand, aquamarine sea play, gold of endless expanses to the horizon.

Materials and methods of finishing

The design uses a combination of wood and stone. From these materials, houses are being built in Morocco. The ceiling can be plastered, but the junction between it and the wall must be decorated with a carved frieze. An alternative to plaster will be small tile or a non-standard option - wood panels, decorated with carvings. To fix such magnificence on the ceiling with your own hands is very problematic. It will require a complex framework basis, so it is better to resort to the help of professionals. Since in the Moroccan houses the ceilings are high, such a solution looks organically, but in typical domestic apartments, alas, the option will eat valuable centimeters. Ceramic tiles decorate all surfaces and the reason is not only in its beauty, but also in the ability to "cool" the room.

Since the country is located in Africa, it is characterized by temperature fluctuations and scorching heat in the afternoon, so the locals fled to the cool of their homes. The tile is chosen bright, patterned and small. Large fragments, which are often used for finishing kitchens and bathrooms, in this case are not suitable. You should choose a special mosaic tile with thematic patterns: rhombuses, octagons, stars, squares and other geometric shapes.

Furniture

The basis of the furniture set is made up of sofas. They are located in almost every room, and, the more, the better. If possible, the sofas make the entire perimeter. They are covered with an armada of pillows. Coffee is attached to the sofas not low, but coffee tables. Although both of these concepts have merged into one, but in Morocco they are really used to drink hot drinks in miniature cups, rather than storing periodicals in a special niche. By the way, the table may not be one. The picturesque composition of several elements of the same type will be a bright decoration of the interior. Also used trestle beds, couches, benches, low dressers. Furniture is made of solid wood with the addition of forged elements.

Lighting

Lighting in the interior should be soft and not cause the desire to obscure. Lamps are traditionally made of metal. The "shell" is decorated with oriental patterns. Decorative elements are called - Moroccan lanterns. Their shape may be different:

  • Rectangular lamps, topped with a miniature dome with a loop for hanging. They are located either on the floor or threaded through special hooks in the walls.
  • The elongated shape of the "spindle" with numerous ornaments and banners. Organically look not only in the interior of the room, but also on the terrace, open veranda, gazebo.
  • Yule shape, but with soft transitions and rounded sides.

Ceiling chandeliers do not play such an important role as in European styles. Accents are made on sconces, floor and table lamps. Complement the lighting system with wax candles, which will give the atmosphere a touch of eastern romance.

Ceilings are traditionally made of copper and brass by forging. Stamped items can be purchased in specialized stores, but unique products will give the atmosphere a unique charm and become a “signature” in the author's design.

Accessories and decor

The decor is made exclusively from natural materials. Style originates in the depths of the ages, when plastic and composites simply did not exist. Materials prevail metal, glass, wood and clay. By the way, there is little use of decorative elements, because the luxurious painting on the walls and the diversity of colors make the interiors bright and original. Sofas and beds are decorated with numerous pillows, among which there are necessarily elements of elongated shapes, traditional for the east.

Decorative niches in the walls are filled with metal plates on stands, elegant caskets, candlesticks on massive legs, vases with floral patterns, earthenware jars and bowls. High windows are decorated with black metal bars. In hot climates, they are rarely closed, so the element is more necessary to protect against uninvited guests.

The role of textiles in style

Textile plays the main role-forming role. From fabrics, only natural fabrics are selected: silk, wool, flax and cotton. There are textiles in almost every corner of the room: in the upholstery, elegant pillowcases for pillows, heavy curtains and light, air curtains, canopies over the bed, handmade rugs. If the upholstered furniture has an ugly coating "from the manufacturer", then it is covered with covers and bedspreads. It is advisable to use unique textiles that can be made even by yourself. The fabric is decorated with a thematic, oriental pattern, which is continued in the surfaces of ceramic tiles.

Kitchen interier

The walls and floors of Moroccan cuisine are tiled. To highlight the background of her apron, you can use neutral "natural" shades: sand, cobalt, brown. Furniture is chosen from a tree with roughly treated surfaces. Hinged shelves are decorated with metal and clay plates, pots, vases.

If the kitchen is combined with the dining room, then a group of Moroccan lamps of various shapes with a metal “frame” is hung above the dining table. Chairs are made of wood, covered with carvings. Finishing registration with a couple of pots with potted plants.

Living room decoration

The living room is considered to be the favorite room of the Moroccans, since it is in it that visitors and household members gather. Required attribute for this room - a sofa. It should be as long as possible and more. If the dimensions of the room permit, then it is decorated with a sofa "series" around the perimeter. Windows curtain heavy curtains and airy tulle. The walls are decorated with carved panels, ceramic tiles, wall lamps, niches with thematic decorations. The ceiling is supported by decorative columns.

Moroccan Bedroom

Moroccan bedroom, like other rooms, has a minimal set of furniture: a wide bed, a couple of bedside tables and a table. If the room is spacious, then a traditional sofa (couch, couch) with a coffee table is placed next to it. The accent wall at the head of the bed is decorated with a niche that has a traditional oriental dome with an elongated tip. It is decorated with a composition of ceramic, glass, clay or wooden elements. The ceiling is crowned with a small chandelier, and on either side of the bed a wall lamp is installed symmetrically. The windows are decorated with wrought iron bars. Cover them with airy tulle. The floor must be covered with rugs. Sand the composition with a hookah, indoor plants in pots, plates of fruit and oriental sweets on the tables.

Bath and Toilet Design

The walls and floor in the bathroom in Moroccan style trimmed with small tiles with a traditional ornament. From the modern shower stall refuse in favor of a luxurious bath. Sink use invoice. An original solution would be to buy a piece of stone, which has a high cost, but it will last for decades. The facades of lockers for storage of towels and household trifles are decorated with a fine lattice. If the ceilings are high, then an arched frame construction is installed above the bathroom, complemented by open shelves on the sides.

You can spy on the Moroccan style in numerous themed cafes and restaurants. Strangely enough, but catering facilities honestly reflect the ethnic features of the situation and do not allow the appearance of details that are not peculiar to it. Of course, to be inspired, you can go to the country where this trend originated. Luxurious, endless landscapes, picturesque sunsets, the horizon line "quivering" from the hot air - this is what will help you find the right mood to create a distinctive, unique interior in the Moroccan style.
